The Colt Detective Special is a compact-sized revolver that holds 6 rounds of .38 Special, this means it holds one extra round compared to Smith & Wesson's J Frame models such as the Model 36 also known as the Chief's Special. This revolver was favored by plainclothes police officers due to its reliability and its ease of concealment due to these reasons many law enforcement agencies around the world at one point had armed their plainclothes detectives with the appropriately named Colt Detective Special.
The Tanaka Colt Detective Special R-Model Heavyweight Model Gun is a faithful replica of the early variant of the Colt Detective Special, you could tell this is an early variant because it has a slim barrel profile and a less beefy pistol grip. This model gun is a nonfiring replica that is great as a movie prop, or simply to be used as a tool to train on. This revolver is made of a heavy-weight type of plastic, allowing it to have realistic weight even though it is made of plastic.
