Developed under the guidance of Larry Vickers, a former US Army Delta Force operative and consultant for Heckler & Kochs R&D, the HK416 represents a significant enhancement over the M4 and M16 platforms. It is particularly distinguished by its short-stroke gas-piston system, which is derived from the G36 platform. To address the needs of close-quarter battle and personal defense weapon, a prototype known as the HK416C was created. This ultra-compact rifle was submitted for the UK Ultra Compact Individual Weapon contract but ultimately lost to the LWRC M6A2.
In collaboration with CYMA CGS, the HK416C is a licensed product from Umarex (Elite Force). This gas blowback rifle system closely replicates its real-steel counterpart, featuring the same trademarks, licensing, and rollmarks from H&K. As part of the Lightning series, CGS has engineered this lightweight yet durable platform, delivering a high quality rifle with robust internals. The Lightning Rifles incorporate cutting-edge technology from CYMA, utilising an aluminum receiver, outer barrel, short stock, and handguard to minimise weight. Additionally, a lightweight aluminum bolt carrier group and polymer endcap enable a high cyclic rate of fire, reaching 18 rounds per second. The design reinforces critical components with steel, including the fire control group, castle nut, forward assist, receiver end plate, and takedown pin, ensuring a durable and lasting platform.
Aesthetically, the rifles ultra-compact design features an 8.9-inch configuration with 14mm CCW threading for attaching muzzle devices and tracer units. It is equipped with a shortened H&K factory 416 RIS quad Picatinny rail interface handguard for mounting optics and other accessories. The receiver displays the licensed trademarks and rollmarks for the HK416C, along with a straight magwell design and an ambidextrous fire selector system that offers Safe, Semi, and Auto fire modes. The pistol grip includes storage for a 12g CO2 capsule and either a 18650 battery or two CR123A batteries, along with a functional jam enhancer. As a C variant, it features the compact PDWC stock, which allows the shooter to extend and adjust to a comfortable position while remaining collapsible for easy maneuverability in confined spaces or for storage. The 416C also comes with a KAC foregrip capable of storing batteries or a 12g CO2 capsule.
At its core, the 416 employs the reliable MWS ZET-inspired system, with commonly worn components constructed from steel to enhance durability and longevity. Key components such as the fire control group, forward assist, trigger pin, and takedown pin are all made from steel. Furthermore, CYMA has integrated a convenient quick-release hop-up chamber system from T8 SP Systems, allowing for easy removal of the hop-up chamber to change the hop-up rubber and inner barrel without needing to detach the barrel nut. The ambidextrous fire control of the 416C provides safe, semi, and full-auto fire modes, featuring a curved trigger that ensures minimal travel and a satisfyingly crisp break when pulled. Additionally, these Lightning HK416 GBB rifles are HPA ready out of the box, as CYMA includes their unique CGS Tokyo Marui MWS Gas Magazine, which allows for quick swapping of the 30-round magazine feed tube and provides an optional inlet port for HPA line installation without requiring modifications.
The Umarex (Elite Force) HK416 Lightning Series by CGS is also available in the legacy HK416D variant, the improved ambidextrous HK416A5 variant and the compact HK416C variant!
