Developed at the request of Larry Vickers, a former US Army Delta Force operative and consultant for Heckler & Koch's R&D, the HK416 represents a significant enhancement of the M4 and M16 platforms. It is particularly distinguished by its short-stroke gas-piston system, which is derived from the G36 platform. The HK416A5 variant builds upon the success of its predecessors by incorporating ambidextrous fire controls, including an ambidextrous fire selector, charging handle, bolt release, and magazine release, thereby accommodating both right- and left-handed shooters, even when switching to their offhand. This rifle has become the standard issue for the French armed forces and serves as the precursor to the G95A1, the standard issue rifle for the German armed forces.
A collaboration between Heckler & Koch and CYMA CGS, the HK416A5 is a licensed product from Umarex (Elite Force). This gas blowback rifle system faithfully replicates its real steel counterpart, featuring the same trademarks, licensing, and rollmarks from H&K. As part of the Lightning series, CGS has designed this lightweight yet robust platform, ensuring a high-quality rifle with durable internals. Lightning Rifles utilize the latest technology from CYMA, featuring an aluminum receiver, outer barrel, buffer tube, and handguard to minimize weight, along with a lightweight aluminum bolt carrier group and polymer piston that enable a high cyclic rate of fire at 18 rounds per second. The Lightning Rifles reinforce critical components to enhance longevity, employing steel for functional parts such as the fire control group, castle nut, forward assist, receiver end plate, and takedown pin, resulting in a durable and lasting platform.
Aesthetically, the rifle's ambidextrous A5 design includes an 11-inch configuration with 14mm CCW threading for mounting muzzle devices and tracer units, complemented by an H&K factory 416 RIS quad Picatinny rail interface handguard for optics and peripheral devices. The receiver features licensed trademarks and rollmarks for the HK416A5, along with a revised angular magwell design and ambidextrous fire controls, offering Safe, Semi, and Auto fire selection modes, as well as ambidextrous magazine release, bolt release, and charging handle. The pistol grip is designed to provide ample storage space for a 12g CO2 capsule and either a 18650 battery or two CR123A batteries, along with a functional jam enhancer. As an A5 variant, it includes a 6-position G28-inspired precision rifle stock, which is a simplified version of the stock that omits the adjustment features and storage capabilities.
At its core, the 416 employs the reliable MWS ZET-inspired system, with commonly worn components constructed from steel to enhance durability and longevity. This design prolongs the reliability of the rifle over time, with components such as the fire control group, forward assist, trigger pin, and takedown pin made from steel. Additionally, CYMA incorporates a convenient quick-release hop-up chamber system from T8 SP Systems, allowing for easy removal of the hop-up chamber to change the hop-up rubber and inner barrel without needing to detach the barrel nut. The ambidextrous fire control of the 416A5 offers safe, semi, and full-auto fire modes, featuring a curved trigger that provides minimal travel and a satisfyingly crisp break when pulled. Furthermore, these Lightning HK416 GBB rifles are HPA-ready out of the box, as CYMA includes their unique CGS Tokyo Marui MWS Gas Magazine, which allows for quick swapping of the 30-round magazine feed tube and provides an optional inlet port for installing an HPA line without modification.
