The United States Army's Delta Force, at the request of R&D NCO Larry Vickers, collaborated with Heckler & Koch to develop a new carbine in the 1990s for use in close quarters combat (CQC), as the current standard weapon for close quarters environments were typically submachine guns that were chambered in 9mm which was considered "too weak" and that the M4 carbine was considered too large with its 14.5 inch barrel. And so, ultimately, they came up with the HK416 platform.
The base HK416 platform is an assault rifle chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge and is designed and manufactured by the German company Heckler & Koch. Although the design is based on the AR-15 platform (specifically the COLT M4 carbine platform, which is the standard issue rifle of the U.S. Military), it uses a proprietary short-stroke gas piston system from the Heckler & Koch G36 family of rifles. The HK416 A5 is a new and improved variant with ambidextrous controls that was first seen in the individual Carbine competition. It features a stock that is similar to that of the G28 designated marksman rifle, except slimmer and non-cheek weld adjustable. The rifle also features an improved tool-less adjustable gas regulator for suppressor usage and can accommodate barrel lengths down to 10.5" inches without modifications, as well as a redesigned lower receiver with fully ambidextrous controls, optimized magazine and ammunition compatibility, and a nifty repair kit that is housed inside the pistol grip.

The GHK HK416A5 GBB Airsoft rifle series will be available as both a Standard Version, which is equipped with a durable zinc-alloy bolt carrier, and a Premium Version, which is equipped with a heavy-duty CNC steel bolt carrier assembly.
