Reputably known for its reliability and compact form factor at its time, the P229 was an enhanced variant of the P228, replacing the stamped steel slide with a stainless steel slide designed to enhance its durability and sturdiness, along with accommodating stronger munitions such as .357 SIG and .40 SW calibres. Similar in aesthetics and size, the P228 and P229 share little to no compatibility with each other, making them essentially separate models. The P229 prompted stainless steel slides to become the standard, seeing the discontinuation of the P228. The P229 became a successive best-selling model, seeing use by U.S. Law Enforcement, Federal and Armed Forces, such as the Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard, Federal Air Marshal's Service, and the Secret Service.
Replicated as a model firearm by Tanaka, the P229 maintains the same manual of arms for those familiar with the P226 platform. It features fully operational fire controls, including a manual de-cocker safety lever, a magazine release for its 10-round capacity magazine, and a dual single-action/double-action trigger system. P229 features ergonomic grip control and an accessible trigger placement that small-hand users can still operate the pistol comfortably.
At its core, the pistol is constructed from heavyweight ABS resin, reinforced with zinc alloy to ensure a robust structure. Its recoil rod guide incorporates shock-absorbing buffers to minimise wear and impact during the slide cycle, along with an elastomeric hammer stop to cushion the hammer's impact when dropped. Similar to their industry counterparts, Tanaka delivers quality Japanese realism, with a visual design that appeals to collectors, as the ABS polymer construction is not immediately discernible. The P229's surface features a two-tone finish, with its slide Cerakoted to provide an enhanced finish and durability. This P229 is an excellent addition for collectors and enthusiasts of this model, serving as a remarkable display piece.
