S&W's customisation division, the Performance Center, was established in 1990 by two skilled in-house gunsmiths. Initially, the aim was to produce specialised competition models based on their own firearms. However, with the introduction of specialised CNC machines, the department evolved to design and manufacture new models from scratch, selling prototypes exclusively to distributors. Today, the department manages a broad range of tasks, from producing premium models in S&W's regular lineup to limited-edition items, uniquely designed models, and products with special features, as well as repairing standard-line firearms. All production staff are specialists with experience in handgun shooting, and their high level of technical skill remains unchanged.
Tanaka reproduces this Performance Centre M29 5-in V-Comp revolver as a Tanaka Heavyweight variant with the Pegasus Version 3 gas system, enhancing actual shooting performance and maximises the potential of the original Pegasus system, resulting in better accuracy and consistent performance in altered temperature state. The Pegasus gas system employs a revolver cylinder for the dual purpose of storing gas and BBs. Gas is filled at the rear of the cylinder, while the dedicated BB channel, located at one of the front chambers, accommodates 13 rounds of 6mm BBs. To load each chamber, simply spin the cylinder to insert a single BB into each of the six chambers. Once depleted, the loading process can be repeated. Similar to its Japanese industry counterparts, Tanaka craftsmanship is exemplary. The smooth operation of the cylinder, trigger engagement, and hammer or cylinder release showcases an impressive level of Japanese artistry.
Unique to the this Performance Centre M29, the V-Comp variant of the M29, includes a mounted compensator on its 5-in barrel, with a counterweight at the bottom to reduce overall recoil. Although the Tanaka M29 gas gun does not feature any felt recoil experience, Tanaka faithfully replicates it's spartan appearance. It comes standard with N-frame bearing the Performance Center trademark and realistic engraving, a round rear sight, and a semi-wide trigger with a stopper. Additionally, the weighted Hogue-type rubber grip with a finger channel and heavy-weight resin body significantly improve rigidity and weight. The visual design evokes a collector's appeal, as the ABS plastic construction is not immediately apparent until held. Furthermore, the revolver boasts a robust build quality, utilising heavyweight resin melded with zinc die-cast for improved structural rigidity and realistic weight, along with an operation is remarkably smooth, with no resistance in the controls. The 5-inch revolver is adorned with S&W Performance Centre markings, enhancing the ownership experience of this M29 replica.
