Description

The M40 is a bolt-action sniper rifle used by the United States Marine Corps. It has had four variants ? the M40, M40A1, M40A3, and M40A5. The M40 was introduced in 1966. Each M40 is built from a Remington 700 bolt-action rifle, and is modified by USMC 2112 (Armorers) at Marine Corps Base Quantico, using components from a number of suppliers. New M40A3s are being built, and A1s are upgraded to A3s as they rotate into the armory for service and repair. The rifles have had many sub-variations in telescopic sights, and smaller user modifications.

The original M40 was a military type-classified version of the Remington 700; it was factory-made, and had a one-piece wooden stock. The M40A1 switched to fiberglass stocks made by McMillan, with new scopes. The trigger pull on the M40A1 is 3 to 5 lb (2.3 kg) making it lighter then a stock M700 to improve accuracy.

The M40 is the go to rifle for Airsofters looking to put together a milspec loadout sniper. With an M40 in your collection, you can outfit as a sharpshooter in pretty much any military or law enforcement branch type from the US and many other western countries and it would be technically acceptable as correct.

Tanaka gas bolt action rifles are one of the most accurate out-of-the-box sniper weapons in Airsoft today. The gas reservoirs are generously sized for minimal cool down effect between shots, especially when using restraint in rate of fire. The long barrel and stable adjustable hop-up allow it to compete on the field with spring bolt action weapons and while highly modified spring weapons can perform more reliably then gas rifles, the Tanaka weapon is good enough to go toe to toe with the higher rate of fire afforded by the lighter bolt pull then that of a high power spring weapon.

Tanaka gas rifles, while vary in specifics, are all rather accurate. At middle to long range they can engage human size targets with hit ratios of 5.5/10 with even the most unskilled shooters and with practices you can comfortably get that up to 7.5/10 and even higher in the hands of someone who really knows what they are doing. Full metal outer barrel and body make it a good solid platform, always a good option for buying peace of mind in the field. Zero resistance bolt action. Gas operated, it takes HFC134 gas for 360fps power out of the box and clocking much higher on Top / Green gas.

Gas rifles are also rather quiet; no where near as noisy as electric weapons. While technically it generates more decibels then a spring weapon most spring weapons have a report of a piston slam and spring which is very distinctive where as gas rifle, particularly Tanaka, are a nothing more then a gas discharge. As such, the sound of a gas weapon is much softer and when more then 10 meters / 33 feet away its sound pattern can disappear in the wind almost completely.
