Initially introduced as a proof of concept in 2008, the FMG-9 was engineered to serve as a concealable, portable submachine gun (SMG) solution. It employs modern design techniques and reduces overall weight by utilizing polymer materials. Notably, the FMG can be folded into a discreet briefcase-like form, enabling it to be stored beneath a jacket or in a standard bag, with a straightforward deployment mechanism activated by a gentle tug on the charging handle.
Developed as a gas blowback (GBB) platform by Maruyama, this model closely replicates the unique foldable SMG, arriving fully assembled and ready for use. The FMG-9 is delivered in its folded state, which can be rapidly deployed by pulling the charging handle, allowing the system to automatically transition into firing mode. It features familiar controls akin to those of a G18c pistol, a low-profile handstop, and iron sights accessible via the charging handle, along with a stock for bracing and stabilising the platform. The carry handle's design accommodates the attachment of pistol weapon lights, and the charging handle can be removed to expose an upper Picatinny rail interface for mounting optics and other accessories. Utilizing a G18c upper, Maruyama incorporates a non-tilting, extended outer barrel that tapers to the FMG-9's edge, complete with 14mm CCW threading for attaching a muzzle device or tracer.
Furthermore, the system is compatible with VFC G17 and G18c style GBB magazines, offering an advantage for owners of Umarex (Elite Force) / VFC Glock models, as they can utilise the same magazine ecosystem. To fold the gun, one must lift the cheekpiece lever and depress the pistol grip lever, with the stock designed to accommodate a long G-style magazine in its folded state.
At its core, the internal mechanism features a G18c system, with a familiar G18c slide that opens the FMG-9, granting access to the G18c-style semi-automatic fire selector. Removing the slide reveals a VFC-style G18c system, providing a sense of familiarity for Umarex / VFC Glock owners, and includes steel-reinforced components for high-stress areas such as the hammer, sear, and slide lock. The hop-up can be adjusted from the front of the gun by turning the hex screw on the recoil rod.
