The Mk18 Mod 1 is a compact airsoft rifle featuring a 10.3-inch barrel, representing a modern evolution of the Close Quarter Battle Receiver concept for the M4A1 carbine, originally developed for the US Navy. This variant is a collaboration between Double Eagle and Daniel Defense, licensed by EMG, with Double Eagle meticulously crafting the rifle from precision-machined aluminium and reinforced QPQ steel components, delivering a high-quality GBB rifle to the airsoft community. Recognising that traditional M4 carbines and M16 rifles were often too lengthy for specific missions, the NSWC-Crane Division initiated two receiver replacement programmes to address operational needs. Among these, the CQBR project was launched to create a compact rifle suitable for VIP protection and urban combat, merging the size of a submachine gun with the capability to fire intermediate cartridges. Initially designed for Naval Special Warfare units, the Mk 18 Mod 0 later became a standard issue rifle, leading to the development of the Mod 1 variant.
Double Eagle faithfully replicates the Mk 18 using precision-machined aluminium and reinforced QPQ steel internals, ensuring an authentic experience for owners of this DD Mk 18 rifle. The rifle features licensed trademarks, rollmarks, and licensing for the Daniel Defense Mk. 18 rifle, equipped with a 14mm CCW outer barrel paired with a birdcage flash hider, along with a DD-licensed Mk 18 RIS II handguard, pistol grip, and collapsible buttstock. The signature grip and buttstock from Daniel Defense provide a rubberised surface texture, enhancing grip placement and ergonomic control during use.
At its core, the rifle incorporates the renowned Marui MWS system for the Mk 18?s internals, selecting a quality system celebrated for its exceptional performance, reliability, and gas efficiency, further enhanced with reinforced components to improve durability. Steel parts, including the bolt-locking plate and internal trigger mechanism components, are integrated to extend the rifle's performance and structural integrity. Similar to our internal review of the Double Eagle?s Ghetto Blaster, the Mk 18 delivers impressive performance for its price, showcasing precise accuracy and responsive fire controls with excellent build quality. Our assessment indicates it achieves accurate groupings at 30 metres, thanks to an audible and tactile easy-to-adjust MWS hop-up wheel that negates the need for aftermarket upgrades. In the field, its responsive controls enhance performance during intense firefights, featuring a crisp trigger and short travel for rapid, accurate shots. The smooth ambidextrous fire selector, bolt release, and enlarged magazine well facilitate quick control changes and effortless magazine swaps. This lightweight and compact rifle is ideal for both indoor and outdoor skirmishes, offering an exceptional balance for use in confined spaces, with great manoeuvrability and precision for mid-range engagements.
