The collaboration between CL Project Design and ARES Airsoft has resulted in the newly enhanced S&W 686 revolver, aptly named the "Combat Revolver". This innovative design modernises the traditional revolver, ensuring it competes effectively with contemporary airsoft guns. Clarence Lai, a notable figure in the airsoft community and a skilled gunsmith, has transitioned from Redwolf Airsoft to establish his own venture, CL Project Design. His focus is on creating components that provide a competitive advantage for popular IPSCA firearms, including the Marui Hi-Capa and KJ Shadow GBB series.
In this project, Clarence has developed a keen interest in utilising revolvers within the IPSCA framework, with initial products aimed at enhancing the performance of the 686. In partnership with ARES, CL Project has introduced a new version of the L-Frame revolver, featuring a black finish and a distinctive bronze cylinder, integrated with modern components to improve the overall performance and user experience of the Combat Revolver, making it suitable for skirmishes, competitions, or even as a fidget toy at home.
This 4-inch revolver showcases markings from both CL Project and ARES, and includes Picatinny rail interfaces on the top and bottom for mounting optics and additional accessories to further optimise shooting performance. The traditional sights have been replaced with vibrant orange fibre optic front sights and adjustable rear sights for rapid target acquisition. The standard thumb release has been upgraded to a more accessible extended version, facilitating easier magazine release manipulation without compromising the shooting grip. The swing-out cylinder features an upgraded CL Project Dan Wesson 715 hexagon design in an exclusive bronze finish, accommodating six ARES Revolver Cartridges or CL Jet Cartridges, and compatible with ARES and CL Project moon clips or the ARES speed loader for swift, efficient reloading. The grip has been enhanced with a rubberised texture and added finger grooves, ensuring a secure hold on the revolver.
At its core, the Combat Revolver retains the internal components of the S&W 686 line, enhanced with a custom-made CL Project competition spring set for responsive firing controls, alongside a singular barrel design for consistent accuracy. The chamber significantly improves shot-to-shot performance through the innovative Top Dead Centre (TDC) design, which applies vertical pressure to the BB, resulting in a straighter, longer, and more stable trajectory. It's airtight construction guarantees optimal consistency with each shot. Additionally, the Infinity hop chamber design ensures exceptional stability for the inner barrel, maintaining precise alignment with the hop chamber. The action of the ARES S&W 686 CO2 airsoft revolver operates smoothly, closely mimicking its real steel counterpart, with a double-action trigger that rolls effortlessly under pressure and a crisp single-action trigger. Lastly, while it may seem trivial, the auditory experience of this airsoft revolver is remarkable; although not constructed from steel, the sounds produced while spinning the cylinder and dry firing without CO2 are incredibly satisfying, akin to ASMR. When gassed, it delivers a pronounced "BANG", notably louder than most airsoft pistols and even many airsoft rifles.
