The SIG MCX is a family of firearms designed and manufactured by SIG Sauer, produced in both selective fire and semi-auto only models, and features a short-stroke gas piston system, which is inherited from the earlier SIG MPX submachine gun. The MCX is available in rifle, carbine, short-barreled rifle, and pistol configurations (the latter configuration generally conforming to the definition of a compact carbine but for taking a pistol brace rather than a buttstock).
The SIG MCX Rattler is a short-barreled rifle variant chambered in .300 AAC Blackout and 5.56. It's intended to serve as a personal defence weapon or PDW for short, featuring a 140mm (5.5" to 6.75") barrel, and comes with a Picatinny rail tail interface for attaching either a compact buttstock or a folding PCB (Pistol Contour Brace). In February 2018, USSOCOM ordered upper receiver group conversion kits for the MCX Rattler in .300BLK for evaluation. With the MCX Rattler being later selected as the winner of SOCOM's Commercial Personal Defence Weapon (CPDW) contract in May 2022, and suppressed MCX Rattlers will be ordered in 5.56 and .300BLK. The SIG MCX Rattler LT is a variant that incorporates the design features of the newer MCX-Spear LT series. However, in September 2022, SIG Sauer was awarded the USSOCOM contract for the RSAR rifle kit. The search for this PDW rifle began in 2017 with particular criteria that had to be met to achieve the needs of USSOCOM operatives. The contract called for providing operators with maximum firepower in a fully concealable weapon package with suppressor capabilities and barrel interchangeability. The 7.75 Rattler LT configuration in 5.56, given its size and modularity, along with a 7.62x39 barrel configuration and SLH-series suppressors, was able to meet and win the contract due to its size and performance capabilities. Dubbed the RSAR999, it is now in service with USSOCOM personnel and active operatives in the field, with feedback singing praises on its modularity and overall lethality.
The APFG USSOCOM RSAR GBB Airsoft rifle is a high-quality replica of the aforementioned MCX RSAR999, albeit without trademarks, which is a shame. However, the overall construction and build quality is nothing to scoff at. The rifle is primarily made using CNC-machined aluminum, giving it a strong yet lightweight, durable build. The RSAR999 features all the same fire controls as one would expect, with the charging handle, bolt catch, fire selector, and magazine release being ambidextrous compared to the older VIRTUS series. The RSAR comes with a full-length Picatinny rail up top for mounting optics and accessories, and is outfitted with the LT series RSAR-specific M-LOK handguard for complete modularity. The fire control group is made of steel, while the bolt is made using aluminum but is reinforced with steel at high-stress points like the bolt catch ledge for added durability. It is compatible with VFC M4/AR V2/V3 green gas magazines, and comes with one 30-round green gas magazine out of the box.
Shooting the gun feels really good, with the bolt cycling being snappy and pronounced with every shot. The trigger pull is very crisp, and the reset is very reactive, allowing for fast and accurate follow-up shots on semi-auto. The fire selector is nice to actuate, and you can really feel the recoil impulse when shooting full-auto. Overall, a great gun to have if you don't mind not having markings, which honestly is a much-needed detail to have for aesthetics, but it does make for a great blank canvas to laser on your own design.
